5 Mindful Minutes Wellness Journal Guide by Coach Kelly Johnson

How many journals have you started and stopped? Have you ever started a journal because of a resolution? Or, maybe you were inspired by a retreat. How did it feel at the time? Was it hard to keep up the habit of journaling? What got in the way?

You’re not alone, I’ve experienced these challenges with journaling so many times. I’ve even burned childhood journals as part of letting go of the little girl I no longer was. Revisiting the past was too painful and my journals held sadness and hurt feelings. It was healing to release them to the fire and embrace the person I am now.

Gratitude journals have become an antidote to the negative spiral often associated with emotional journaling. But, journaling can sometimes create feelings of “I’m not good enough” or giving too much attention to your inner critic. Traditional journaling can be a valuable therapy tool. However, I find it difficult to sustain for long periods of time. And, it can sometimes hinder healing.

Research has shown that practicing mindfulness and gratitude can help rewire your brain to form new positive neural pathways which reinforce feelings of happiness associated with the thought or memory.

Think of a mindful moment – noticing the way the sunlight filtered through the trees, or the feeling of sudsy warmth when washing the dishes and gazing at your children playing in the yard or your neighbour walking their dog. At any time you need, you can revisit these moments and the neural chemistry in your brain will flood you with the feelings of happiness and contentment as if you were in that moment. Even if you’re sitting in traffic, in a meeting, feeling stressed, or bored. Journaling can help reinforce the connections in our brains and can have great benefits when we are striving to meet a goal or establish habits in our lives.

Yet journaling can still be challenging. Keeping a journal practice can be hard. Finding time to prioritize it is often why we fail to sustain the practice. Journaling is another habit to establish and we need triggers and routines that prompt us to write.

Some considerations for when to journal are:

• How often (e.g. daily or weekly)
• Time of day
• On vacation or when travelling
• When a big life event happens
• When inspiration strikes and you feel compelled to write it all out.

There are a lot of reasons and seasons where writing in a journal is a powerful and reflective tool. Such as capturing moments in your life to read about and share with others in the future (or burn and release to heal). I sometimes think of moments and powerful insights that I failed to capture on paper. I wonder, if I had managed to write them down, what would the impact be for me now?

Of course, journal ideas, prompts and inspiration can be found in books, online, or in writing groups. However, unless they resonate or inspire, they may or may not work for you. Trying to follow a prompt can often lead to feeling stuck, not wanting to “go there” or “been there and done that”.

I found myself inspired by my inner calling to live a more balanced life and build my resilience. I wanted to track my habits to see how I could fill my cup daily. To do that, I needed to identify triggers and habits to help the positive changes in my life feel effortless. I found my journal path with my 5 Mindful Minutes method.

"Happiness is about living in the moment and appreciating the smallest things. Surrounding yourself with the things that inspire you and letting go of the obsessions that want to take over your mind. It is a daily struggle sometimes and hard work but happiness begins with your own attitude and how you look at the world."
